Road Rules: Pickup Truck Safety

Please be aware of  and follow all regulations when driving your pickup truck vehicle. Federal standards require that vehicle occupant compartments be designed to protect occupants during a crash. Pickup truck beds are designed to carry cargo, not people, and are not intended to provide protection in a crash. Additionally, children and adults can easily be ejected from cargo areas at relatively low speeds as a result of sharp turns or stops. The Pennsylvania Vehicle Code states that an open-bed pickup truck or open flatbed truck may not be driven at a speed of more than 35 miles per hour if any person is occupying the bed of the truck. Such a truck may not be driven at any speed if a child less than eighteen years of age is occupying the bed of the truck or trailer.
